Always Another Need

By Barry Rudesill

Okay, it's been a while! We've just completed a move and I was asked to speak for a teen camp, so life has been...crazy! But there's something I've begun to realize in the past few years: life ALWAYS has the possibility of being "crazy"!

I can work longer hours to be "successful", I can sign my kids up for 20 different sports and clubs, I can volunteer for meaningful projects, etc. I can book my day from dawn until dusk...and after! I can fill every waking moment with another "need".

Or, I can choose a different path...

Do my children benefit from being overbooked? Probably not. If anything, all I'm teaching them is that life is about being overwhelmed and constantly running to catch up. I'm piling stress on them and I take my stress out on them when I'm feeling that my life is out of control. Their value isn't in another trophy or a team, anyhow!

Do I give my best when I over-commit? Is there a way to do more at my work in less time? Is there only one project that I care most about where I can make a difference instead of working with ten and giving only a small amount of my time and focus? My value isn't in how much work I do or how much I serve, anyhow!

There will always be another "need". There will always be one more person to serve, one more person to help. I can't do it all, no matter how hard I try.

So, my goal is to spend the time focusing on the things that I think are important. To make sure that my family gets my time, not just my "leftovers". And, I will choose to be okay with the fact that I can't do all that "needs" to be done. I don't want to run past life; I want to experience it, instead! And, who knows? I may actually enjoy it in the process!

I think I'll take 15 minutes and go for a walk right now.

We hope you enjoy your journey!
