Why Make New Year's Resolutions

By Barry Rudesill

Why make New Year's Resolutions if you don't plan on keeping them?

I was asked this question recently, and I think it's brilliant, so I'm going to try to answer it here:

1. It recognizes there is room for improvement. If your life is "perfect", then why would you ever want to change? But, if you're like the rest of us, there is always something we can do better; always another step to take. A New Year's Resolution is saying, "I can do better, I can be better!" That's a very positive outlook on life.

2. It recognizes that we are in control of our choices. A New Year's Resolution wouldn't make sense if everything we did was "someone else's fault"! If we constantly blame others, rather than owning our choices and behaviors, then we can never change anything...someone else would have to do it for us! By realizing that WE have the power to change our lives for the better, we are giving ourselves permission to live our lives for the better. Again, that's a great outlook to have!

3. Even if you fail, you've succeeded! Think about it this way: a lot of us, at some time in our lives, have been overwhelmed by the challenges in front of us. A New Year's Resolution means that you've identified one area of your life that you feel can be better and then you've taken a step forward! Every step you take, even if they're little ones, mean that you are one step closer to a "new you"! (You can't change if you don't try!)

So this year, don't worry about whether or not you keep your resolutions throughout the whole year - although we're cheering for you! - instead, focus on the next step to moving forward to a healthy, new you. You may be surprised where the little steps may lead!

We hope you enjoy your journey!
